How to Identify Your Target Audience and Anticipate Their Needs

If you have a business or are just starting you know that one of your main concerns is finding the right audience  and knowing what their needs are before they do. This is very important because you want to be able to target as many people as possible and to be able to serve them even when they don’t know exactly what they need. It is important to remember that you’ll never be able to cater to everyone’s needs so finding the right audience for you and tailoring your business to their needs is key. The steps below will help you find the right audience for your business and make them aware of what your business has to offer them.

While you want as many people as possible to be familiar with your business, the larger the number of people you’re trying to reach the more money you’re going to need to spend to reach them. It might feel like you’re cutting yourself off from potential customers, but in the long run spending your money on finding the right people is going to get you more customers who are looking for what you have to offer. Focusing on those people will let you connect with them on a deeper level than you could with a much broader audience.

The first step you can take is to look back at your business plan.

Look at what you set out to do with your business. Who are you trying to serve? What need does your business solve for a potential customer? Think about who might be interested in having that need met. This broader kind of thinking will help you to narrow down who exactly is likely to be attracted to your company and who you need to market yourself to. Think about what makes you different from other businesses in the same field. This will be very helpful in narrowing down your audience to those most likely to be interested. Think about what you need to know about your customers to be able to provide them with what they are looking for. What do you need to know to find those customers? Ultimately, you get to decide who you want your audience to be so think very carefully about what kind of people you are trying to reach with your business. But keep in mind that it’s all about the customer so you need to focus on who is most likely to be looking for what you have to offer.

After you have those things firmly in mind, start doing some research.

There are plenty of places to start looking for information about your industry, the general market, and other information you will need to know. In a lot of cases you won’t have to do much work to get this information, someone else has done most of the leg work for you. This could mean that the information is not all that specific but you will be able to get a lot of general information for free. Most times you will be able to find at least a little bit of research on possible clients for your business. If you have the budget you may even be able to do some primary research yourself. That can be a very expensive option, but it does allow you to get very specific research that is really targeted towards what you’re looking for. This kind of research can include surveys, focus groups, and interviews. These will all help you to get the kind of information you need about your target audience.

The next step is to build a customer profile.

After you’ve done research you will want to take that information and put together a description of who your typical customer is. This could include demographic information as well as psycho-graphic information. The demographic information will help you figure out what kind of person is likely to seek out your business while the psycho-graphic information will tell you why they are seeking out your business. Both of these types of information will help you narrow down and target your audience.

The next thing you need to consider is where your potential clients are. You need to know just how they’re going to find you as much as if they are looking for your business. It will be helpful to figure out what sites they frequent and if they check their email frequently. Do they love apps? This combined with your customer profile will help you to target the audience you want and get them to your business. Knowing how to facilitate your customers will help you get customers in the first place.

After you have identified your potential customers you need to continue to perform research and stay up on what trends there are in the market and with your competition. This will help you to stay abreast of the market and keep adapting your business practices to get the customers you want and need. It is just as important to see how your customer base evolves as to figure it out in the first place. Continuing to research and adjust your business to get customers is just as important as defining who your customers will be once you’ve started your business. Keeping up on this information will keep you up to date on trends and patterns in your business and keep you on top of the market as your business matures.

Following these steps to help you to define your top customer and get those customers frequenting your business.

Think about what value your business brings to your customers. Think about who would be looking for that need to be met. Do research to see what the market is for your business. Build a profile of the type of customers likely to frequent your business. Continue to stay up to date on the research as you continue your business. All of these things will help you to define your target audience and be able to meet the needs that they have before they even know them themselves and keep your business running smoothly.
